Village grounds really capture the essence!

THE caption to the photograph of the New Road ground, set against the backdrop of Worcester Cathedral and illustrating Peter Hayter’s article (The Cricket Paper, May 12) states that it “encapsulates quintessential ‘English cricketness’”
May I venture to suggest that it is the village cricket ground, rather than any county ground, however ‘delightful’, that captures the essence of English cricket. By way of illustration, I attach a picture of a match earlier this month at the Tendring Park ground in Suffolk (near Stoke-by-Nayland).
