Mind the gap! No, Essex have proved otherwise

LAST season it was being suggested that the gap between First and Second Divisions of the County Championship was so wide that the lower division was little more than a nursery for the ‘big boys’ to cream off the best players.
So it is interesting that Essex, among the seconds last year, are now top of the First Division while Durham, (opener Stephen Cook above) who were third until their relegation, are struggling at the bottom without a win.
Perhaps the gap is not so wide after all.
