It may not seem it now, as Storm Ali leaves its mark, but this summer had been likened to the hot, dry one of 1976 when England basked under a blazing sun and batsmen and spinners thrived. Except, this time that did not happen. Instead, seamers have dominated, batsmen have struggled, while the poor old spinner has not had much of a look-in at all.
