It is not often a long German word will do to describe a delicious moment in cricket but ‘schadenfreude’ seemed the most appropriate as I watched Mark Wood dismantle the West Indies batting during the third Test at Edgbaston.
Taking pleasure in another’s misfortune, the broad meaning of schadenfreude, was definitely the feeling which overcame me.
You see, the England teams I played for in the 1980s took some severe beatings from the West Indies, in particular from their phalanx of fast bowlers.
