It’s been a truly incredible start to Gus Atkinson’s Test career.
His century at Lord’s was outrageous and it will be fascinating to see how his batting develops. As for his bowling, he hasn’t yet been tested against the world’s best batting line-ups but from what we’ve seen so far there’s no reason he can’t be successful regardless of the opposition or conditions.
England’s selectors have been keen to look beyond first-class numbers because in Test match cricket there are certain types of bowlers who are generally going to be more successful across all conditions.
