Australia have called Mitch Marsh into their World Cup squad as cover for Marcus Stoinis.
The all-rounder is receiving treatment for a side strain picked up while bowling in the loss to India on Sunday.
Stoinis managed to return at the death to bowl while dealing with the problem, but has not trained in the lead up to Wednesday’s match with Pakistan.
Australia head coach Justin Langer has drafted Marsh into his squad.
Though an experienced international with 51 ODI caps to his name, Marsh has not featured for his country in the 50-over format since January 2018.
He was set to fly out to England later this week with Australia A, but his World Cup call means he was put on the next available flight.
Australia captain Aaron Finch was far from endorsing Marsh as a straight forward walk in to the team.
“He was meant to fly over with the Australia A side on Friday so he is just coming a couple of days early, just as a bit of a precaution if ‘Stoin’ doesn’t recover quick enough or doesn’t respond to treatment well enough over the next few days.
“That’s something we have to juggle and find a few extra overs – whether we play the extra batter or the extra bowler. We’ll wait and see.”
