Jason Roy deals England injury scare

Jason Roy

England batsman Jason Roy has dealt Trevor Bayliss a major injury worry after retiring hurt from Surrey’s One-Day Cup meeting with Essex.

The opener left play injured with a suspected hamstring issue stranded on 16 and replaced by Will Jacks.

This is not the first time Roy has been hindered by the injury having been restricted to three appearances for his county so far this season.

News of Roy’s early exit for Surrey will unsettle England’s World Cup preparations further, after Alex Hales made himself unavailable for Notts for their match with Lancashire last Friday due to ‘personal reasons’.

Both batsmen were named in England’s 15-man preliminary squad by national selector Ed Smith.

And should both situations tilt towards the worst-case scenario, a opportunity would present itself to James Vince and Sam Billings to work their way into World Cup contention should they perform strongly in the warm-up match against Ireland.

But Baylliss will be closely monitoring the extent of Roy’s issue as the team’s standout performer with the bat over the past 18 months, scoring four centuries in ODI and averaging 42.46.
