ALASTAIR COOK admitted he had been tortured by thoughts he could no longer cut it at Test level before he delivered one of the finest performances of his career at the MCG.
The opener, who gave up the England captaincy earlier this year, had come into this fourth Ashes Test out of form and with huge question marks over his future after averaging just 13.83 across the first three matches of the series.
