Mitchell Johnson has backed Mitchell Starc and the rest of Australia’s fast bowlers to replicate the toil that he delivered to England’s batsmen during the last Ashes series in Down Under.

Johnson topped the wicket-taking charts during the 2013-14 series with a tally of 37 wickets, bowling a sustained barrage of express pace.

After talking to Starc, Johnson believes his former team-mate can claim scalps by peppering the England batsmen with tactics which lean heavy towards the use of short deliveries.

“Starcy is pretty keen on it. From a few text messages he’s (sent, he is) definitely keen,” Johnson said.

“We know Starcy can bowl fast, deadly bouncers. Pat Cummins will bowl fast, deadly bouncers.

“They’ve got all their change-ups as well. Starc can bowl an amazing yorker.”

Starc is currently recovering from a foot injury and will get some competitive game time in Friday’s day-night Sheffield Shield clash between South Australia and New South Wales at the Adelaide Oval.

A match which will also see Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith and David Warner feature.
