17 sixes in the chase from MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings wrapped up a five-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore, as the M.Chinnaswanny Stadium in Bengaluru witnessed a match which broke the record for the number of sixes scored in an IPL match.

Dhoni cleared the boundary rope seven times on his way to an unbeaten 34-ball 70 – an innings was proved pivotal to CSK successfully reining in their target of 206 to win – and raise the tally of maximums scored to 33.

Ambati Rayudu led the way to set Dhoni up for the big finish with his knock of 82 off 53 deliveries bringing CSK back into the reckoning, having been 74-4 after 9 overs.

The match started with batting as destructive as it ended thanks to AB de Villiers, who put on a partnership worth 103 for the hosts’ third wicket alongside countryman Quinton de Kock. A partnership that gave RCB a decent crack at defending their total of 205-8.

But Virat Kohli’s side were left to rue their bowling options at the death, as Corey Anderson’s conceded 17 runs of the last over of the match with Umesh Yadav and Yuzchendra Chahal watching on after bowling their full share of overs.
