Warwickshire secure promotion following draw with Sussex

Warwickshire have ensured that they will be going straight back up to division one of the County Championship after drawing with Sussex at Hove.

After being relegated from division one in 2017, Warwickshire have succeeded in gaining promotion at the first time of asking, winning eight out of their 13 games this season.

Batsmen Dom Sibley and Sam Hain both hit centuries as the visitors racked up 381-3 in their second innings, having amassed a first innings lead of 97.

Ian Bell was, meanwhile, taken to hospital after retiring hurt with a damaged thumb, the result of an Ollie Robinson delivery.

The hosts tried to vain to force a declaration out of Warwickshire to try and fight for a positive result, using nine different bowlers on the final day including wicketkeepers Michael Burgess and Ben Brown.

Warwickshire resolutely batted on to take the game to a draw, a result which confirmed their promotion at the expense of the chasing third-placed Sussex.

Warwickshire now sit on 219 points, joint top with already promoted Kent. Warwickshire can win the title next week as they face a title showdown with Kent at Edgbaston.
