Australia have seen Shaun Marsh ruled out of their World Cup squad as he and Glenn Maxwell suffered injuries during a net session. The pair were taken to hospital for scans after the blows.
Shaun Marsh, who has already been replaced in the squad by wicket-keeper batsman Peter Handscomb, suffered a fractured forearm after a Pat Cummins delivery hit his wrist.
Shaun Marsh has played a limited role in this World Cup as he made 26 runs across two innings against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Peter Handscomb is already playing in England for the Australia A side and has already struck fifties against Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire over the last two weeks.
Australia coach Justin Langer confirmed that Shaun Marsh would require surgery following the injury.
“This is obviously shattering news for Shaun and the squad. Throughout this tournament, his spirit, professionalism and the way he has competed has been typically outstanding.”
Glenn Maxwell also had to finish the net session early after being hit by a Mitchell Starc delivery.
The destructive middle-order batsmen was cleared of a severe injury and Langer will be hoping that he can regain full fitness quickly.
“The scans have cleared Glenn of any serious damage and we’ll continue to monitor him over the coming days. We are hopeful he will be fit to perform for us on Saturday against South Africa.”
Maxwell has had a relatively underwhelming tournament with the bat, with a top-score of 46 not out so far.
However, with his ability to provide balance to the bowling alongside Marcus Stoinis, Australians will be hoping he can recover as the semi-finals near.
