Bob Harriott almost missed the event that turned out to be a red letter day for Devon cricket – because he was left sweating about getting the time off work.
Harriott wasn’t the only one who had the same headache, it was a common problem for the county because many of their best players had used up their annual leave.
They needed understanding employers who would give them extra time off after Devon had been challenged by Durham knowing that a draw would be good enough to give them the title.
