BRIAN Taylor was an Essex captain with over 500 firstclass appearances to his name, though he never quite managed to make it into an England side.
It wasn’t without trying though and indeed Taylor, who died this week at the age of 84, was selected for a tour to South Africa in 1956-57.
The wicketkeeper, who also scored 18,329 runs in his career, never made a Three Lions XI, though he went on to become a selector once he’d hung up his spikes. Taylor’s 1,295 dismissals as wicketkeeper is the seventh-highest in first-class cricket.
