England have an Ashes tour team to pick and only a meaningless five-match ODI series against the West Indies to come (which starts with a special treat, a T20 in the evening at Chester-le-Street, with St John’s Ambulance on hand to deal with cases of hypothermia), to come. But if someone new does well in the ODIs, I would bet heavily on their making the Ashes trip for the Tests.
