Essex’s cricketers arrived at Eastbourne last Sunday morning with high hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Royal London Cup. Those from Sussex, by contrast, knew their own chances were merely arithmetical. Many of the rest of us turned up praying simply that the Saffrons would again exercise its rich magic.
