Two weeks ago today, Brian Close’s widow, Vivienne, unveiled the street sign to a new road in Baildon, honouring the former Yorkshire and England captain and the youngest man to play Test cricket for England, who had lived in the town.
Disappointingly, it was not a cul de sac which could then just have been named Brian Close, but a walkway – Brian Close Walk. But at least Close played in the era when batsmen still walked.
