Judging solely by the look on Alex Hales’ face at the end of The Hundred match between Trent Rockets and Northern Superchargers the other night the fact that he had just hit David Willey for six to seal a remarkable victory would not have been immediately apparent.
As his teammates joined their supporters in celebrating with abandon and the losing skipper Ben Stokes, no doubt ruing the dropped catch that allowed Hales to survive and prosper still managed to smile his way through the disappointment, the man who had made it happen appeared weighed down by sadness and not a little bewildermen...
