Steven Finn never had the slick, repeatable action to be England’s Curtly Ambrose but he should have been our Jason Gillespie. That he ended up with under half of the Australian’s 259 Test wickets, from just over half the games, speaks of an unfulfilled talent – an English speciality when it comes to tall fast bowlers.
The eagle-eyed among you will point out that Finn, who took 125 wickets in 36 Test matches, was on course for that goal. Yes, but you need to stay the course, something he was unable to do despite having the second best strike-rate among England ...
