The day after the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) released its report, they assembled at Lord’s, proudly displaying their distinctive colours, sitting in seats only they could occupy and cocooned in the knowledge that the only way to join their club was to be proposed and then interviewed by one of their own.
In no way is the MCC the font from which all the problems cited in the ICEC report emanate but it remains the ultimate totem of the English game’s exclusivity.
