It was never about ball tampering. These actions should not be condoned, but as long as humans compete to win, we will continue to try and gain an advantage in all manner of ways. Regulations are in place to prevent any behaviour extending beyond what we consider fair. The appropriateness, severity or effectiveness of a particular sanction can be debated, and will change over time, but the framework exists.
