I recently recalled an encounter I had at the Oval with an old Surrey member Sam Kydd, a 1950s character actor whose appearances in black and white movies rarely involved too much effort in having to learn his lines. If Sam had ever been required to say anything longer than “aye aye skipper” or “you’ll never take me alive copper”, he’d have been off work for weeks with laryngitis.
