There is an urban myth that the ‘rule of three’ denotes the multiple by which, when asked, men overstate and women understate the number of sexual partners they have had.
Batting averages produce a similar phenomenon, albeit without the gender split: it is the club cricketer’s prerogative to round up, to at least the nearest ten, their current average or most recent innings.
