As I write this, England’s hopes of qualifying for the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup hang in the balance. The reigning champions’ demolition of Oman in Antigua gave their net run rate a much-needed boost – crucially, surpassing Scotland’s in the process. But their fate is out of their hands. If the Scots can avoid defeat against Australia on Sunday (and that includes a washout), England will exit a World Cup at the group stage for the second time in eight months, surely spelling the end for the Mott-Buttler partnership.
