Morgan: Jason Roy is a big loss, but Vince is able cover

Eoin Morgan has shared his thoughts on Jason Roy’s fitness as England prepare to face Australia, India and New Zealand.

The opening batsman has already been ruled out of Tuesday’s clash with Australia after an initial assessment of his torn hamstring.

England’s medical team has ordered a second scan to provide more detail on when a return for Roy could be expected.

The Surrey batsman joined in with a nets session on Monday but will not be risked.

“Jason went for a scan this morning and it is all positive news, (but) he won’t be fit for tomorrow,” captain Eoin Morgan said.

“We’ll monitor his progress in the week. To put one game on it (for Roy’s return) I don’t think is sensible, let’s just see how it goes.

“It’s Jason Roy, of course he’s a big loss. He’s an outstanding performer for us. But I’m confident we have the batting covered.”

James Vince will continue to open alongside Jonny Bairstow for the Cricket World Cup hosts.

And Morgan backed Vince to break his run of following up an opulent cover drive by being dismissed there soon after.

“James Vince is an extremely talented, gifted player,” Morgan added. “You can see that just watching him. We’ve every faith in him to go on and get a score at some stage.”
