Sussex County Cricket Club have announced that leg-spinner Will Beer has signed a new contract with the team.
The new deal comes ahead of the start of the county’s T20 Blast campaign, the format in which Beer, 30, has featured most.
The 30-year-old took seven wickets in six T20 appearances for Sussex Sharks last year. A factor in his limited T20 appearances last year was the presence of Afghan superstar Rashid Khan.
This year Beer has made five appearances in the County Championship whilst being an important part of the Sussex one-day side, the leg-spinner missing just one match in the One-Day Cup this season.
Beer, who made his first Sussex appearance at the age of 19 expressed his delight at extending his stay with his home club.
āI am delighted to have signed a new contract with my home club. Cricket is moving in a really exciting direction and I am thrilled to be a part of that with Sussex.
āHopefully we can finish this season strongly with promotion still up for grabs and the T20 Blast on the horizon and take a lot of momentum into the 2020 season.ā
Despite being a bowler Beer’s best moments this year have arguably come with the bat. Earlier this year he made his highest ever List A score, making 75 in a tense one-wicket victory for Sussex. Beer later went on to top-score with 97 against Gloucestershire in a drawn County Championship match in June.
His improved batting is a factor also recognised by his coach Jason Gillespie.
āEven as an experienced professional, heās shown real signs of improvement ā particularly with his batting ā over the last 12 months,” Gillespie said.
āWillās been a very good servant of the club for a number of years and weāre delighted that heāll carry on doing that for the next few years.ā
