Sangakarra to serve second term as MCC president

Sri-Lankan great Kumar Sangakarra is set to have his term as MCC president extended.

With club current activities suspended for the time being, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman and first overseas president of the MCC is expected to remain in his post longer than the traditional 12-month period.

Sangakarra took office last year on October 1st and will be invited to stay on until September 30th 2021.

The 42-year-old’s extension will go ahead subject to approval at the MCC’s Annual General Meeting on June 24th, where Sangakarra will name his successor.

Sangakarra was heavily involved with the club before he took on the role of president, delivering a Cowdrey Lecture in 2011 and receiving an honorary life membership the following year.

He captained the MCC on a tour of Pakistan in February 2020, the club’s first visit in 49 years, and his first return to the country since the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2009.
