The ECB’s New chair Richard Thompson claims the pay to top cricketers is “only going up”. Thompson’s warning comes with the cricket governing body preparing to make redundancies due to a £50 million shortfall in revenue. The shortfall is attributed to global inflation.

Thompson believes the best players will receive a considerably rise in earnings. The increase comes despite the need for the ECB to cut its current outgoings.

The ECB will hope England’s T20 national team can make an impact at the World Cup this year. It will be a difficult competition to win. India are the favourite to lift the trophy and cricket fans are debating whether the team can win the competition. According to Thompson, cricketers can make more money competing in the Indian Super League, Big Bash League, and Pakistan Super League than in the Hundred or the Vitality Blast. The inability to pay top players equal wages will likely keep the English T20 leagues from attracting the best players available.

The ECB chair has also warned that cricket leagues around the world could offer players multi-year contracts to prevent them from competing in other cricket tournaments. The contracts would give cricket’s elite stars more security than they currently enjoy.

Thompson recently expressed his worry over T20 leagues outside of England. He hopes the ECB can provide T20 players security, which would be achieved by paying high salaries. By offering central contracts to retain players and prevent them from competing elsewhere, the ECB could provide quality cricket to fans.

The ECB will announce further redundancies at the national and county levels in the coming months. The organisation has been hit by global inflation. There is a shortfall of around £50m and the redundancies made by the ECB should address the financial problems.

Upcoming reviews of the ECB’s finances will provide a clear direction for the organisation. Thompson wants to identify “clear outcomes” of the ECB’s work. Therefore, the group can focus on the areas that create larger impacts on and off the cricket pitch.

Along with financial reviews, the ECB is looking at ways to improve the structure and quality of domestic and men’s national team cricket. The nine-month review has made several recommendations In it are recommendations to improve cricket in England.

The review looked at a variety of areas within cricket at the professional level. Some of the areas the review investigated were the number of county matches played during the season, the pathway for players from the under-17 level upwards, the use of Kookaburra balls, and a bonus-points system for domestic matches.

One of the most interesting areas the review outlined is giving young players the chance to play overseas. In addition, the group wants to give younger players the chance to achieve international appearances early in their careers. The review doesn’t address the finances Thompson has outlined. Time will tell whether the ECB will have the finances to put the review’s findings in place.
