Surrey negotiated the best part of the last day to draw with Northamptonshire at The Kia Oval and will take a mighty 20-point advantage over title rivals Essex going into the final week of the LV= Insurance County Championship season.
But Northants had relegation confirmed after their gamble to enforce the follow-on rather than set the leaders a target on the final day did not work out. They are still without a win at The Oval since 1994.
