Covid-19: Yorkshire cancel deals for India star Ashwin plus Pooran, Maharaj

Yorkshire have cancelled the contracts of overseas stars Ravichandran Ashwin, Nicholas Pooran and Keshav Majaraj by mutual consent due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Ashwin, the ICC’s fifth-ranked Test all-rounder, will not pull on the White Rose this summer having originally agreed to play in the County Championship.

West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran was set for a second stint at Headingley as Yorkshire’s T20 Blast overseas player while South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj was due to appear in the county’s first two red-ball fixtures against Gloucestershire and Essex.

Yorkshire’s Director of Cricket Martyn Moxon said: “I really appreciate the players’ understanding in this matter.

“We have been in regular contact with the players and their agents throughout this Covid pandemic.

“They have been extremely professional and appreciate the uncertainty facing counties at present.”

On Friday the English professional season was postponed until July 1st at the very least.

Nine rounds of County Championship action will be lost as the ECB currently looks for holes in the calendar to reschedule England internationals as well as remaining domestic red and white ball fixtures.

The board will meet on Wednesday to discuss the future of The Hundred with a potential cancellation of the ECB’s flagship competition set to cost around £10m.
