ROLAND Butcher is hopeful that Sophia Dunkley’s Test debut against India can inspire a new generation of black female cricketers to take up the sport.
The former Middlesex batsman became the first black cricketer to represent England when he made his debut against the West Indies in Barbados – the island of his birth – in March 1981.
Now he tells The Cricket Paper that Dunkley is capable of carving out a legacy of her own after making her England bow in the draw with India.
“In the women’s game that star is there now and people will be able to identify with Sophia Dunkley,” he says.
