England Under-19s have called Warwickshire’s George Panayi and Yorkshire’s Harry Brook into their squad for the One-Day Series against Sri Lanka, which starts at Wormsley next Wednesday.
They replace the Worcestershire seamer Josh Tongue, who is injured, and Tom Moores, the Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper-batsman who is currently gaining senior experience in all formats of the game in a loan spell at Lancashire.
Panayi, pictured, has taken a total of six wickets in the first three innings of the two-match four-day series against Sri Lanka. “George has impressed us all with his performances in our red-ball matches against the Sri Lankans, and earned the chance to stay with us for the one-day series,” said the England Development Programme head coach Andy Hurry.
Brook, a 17-year-old from Keighley who impressed for an Invitational XI in Sri Lanka’s warm-up game in Loughborough last month, made his first-class debut for Yorkshire against Pakistan A in June. He doubles Yorkshire’s representation in the squad, joining Ed Barnes from Knaresborough, who matched Panayi by taking three wickets in the first innings of the second four-day match against Sri Lanka in Northampton this week.
Somerset’s offspinning allrounder Dom Bess has already joined the squad ahead of the three-match One-Day Series, which ends with a day-night match at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence on August 16 that will be shown live on Sky Sports. Bess will be joined this weekend by his county team-mate Ben Green and Nottinghamshire’s Jack Blatherwick.
Worcestershire’s left-arm spinner Ben Twohig will also rejoin the squad after being released earlier this week to join his county squad ahead of their County Championship match against Kent in Canterbury.
England U19s squad for One-Day Series: Max Holden (Middlesex, captain), Josh Dell, Zen Malik, Ben Twohig (all Worcestershire), George Hankins (Gloucestershire), George Bartlett, Dom Bess, Ben Green (all Somerset), Ollie Pope (Surrey, wk), Aaron Beard (Essex), Ed Barnes, Harry Brook (both Yorkshire), George Panayi (Warwickshire), Jack Blatherwick (Nottinghamshire).
