A sign of the times? Virat Kohli playing a reverse sweep will adorn the cover of the 2017 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
Kohli, the second best Test batsman currently in the world, is the sole player on the 154th edition of Almanack, which is crammed as usual.
The Cricket Paper columnist Derek Pringle reveals the secrets of ball-tampering while Matthew Engel looks back at 60 years of Test Match Special and Gideon Haigh explores the evolution of the six.
Wisden editor Lawrence Booth said: “Virat Kohli is the most exciting batsman in the world today. He pulverised England during India’s 4-0 Test win before Christmas, and averages over 50 in each of the three international formats – a remarkable achievement. And he’s a product of his time.
“The cover of Wisden 2017 shows him playing a reverse sweep – the kind of unorthodoxy that would once have been frowned upon, but is now part of batting’s bread and butter.
“The Almanack is delighted to be able to celebrate the game’s evolution, in the hands of one of its most thrilling practitioners.”
