Shashank Manohar has been elected to a second term as ICC chairman unopposed by any other candidate.
The former BCCI chief’s first term was set to come to its end in June and it became clear at last month’s quarterly meeting between the ICC board in Kolkata that Manohar had the lion’s share of support from ICC directors, forcing former ECB chairman Giles Clarke to end his run.
“It is an honour to be re-elected as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council and I would like to thank my fellow ICC Directors for their continued support,” Manohar said.
“Together we have made big strides over the last two years, fulfilling promises I made to the sport when I was appointed in 2016.
“Over the next two years we can look forward to launching a global strategy for the sport in partnership with our Members so we can grow the game and ensure more of the world can enjoy cricket. The sport is in good health but we are the guardians of the game and we must continue to work hard to maintain that.”
Elections for the ICC chairmanship require candidates to attain formal support from two or more ICC directors, with the BCCI throwing their weight behind old associate Manohar and the ECB unwilling to endorse Clarke.
Manohar’s policies to date have seen Ireland and Afghanistan granted Full-Member status, but also refused to bow to calls for the Cricket World Cup to be increased from a ten-team competition to include more nations.
