England captain Eoin Morgan has admitted his side failed to match India for their explosive batting in going down to a 2-1 series defeat in T20 internationals.
The tourists had Rohit Sharma steer them to victory in Bristol with an unbeaten 56-ball 100, after England had posted their third-highest T20 total of 198-9.
And after his side’s utter dominance with the bat in the first powerplay, Morgan voiced his frustration that his side were not able to push on to take advantage of the small boundary.
“On a good wicket, small ground, we should be better than that,” the England skipper commented.
England produced their best powerplay display in T20 internationals in taking India’s first six overs for 73 runs without loss. But then wickets tumbled for the hosts, as Hardik Pandya wreaked havoc with the ball to claim 4-38.
Morgan added he was disappointed not to see his bowlers prove as fruitful in watching India reached 201-3 to win.
“India never really got away from us, but we struggled to take wickets,” Morgan said.
“They kept up with the rate, and then it was a position in the 16th or 17th over they could take the game away from us – which is disappointing.”
“India were probably on top of their game today, and we weren’t – and we were just short.”
England dropped Test captain Joe Root from the side to play at the County Ground in order to make room for the fit-again Ben Stokes. A move Morgan described as ‘not an easy decision’.
The white-ball action is set to continue later this week when the first ODI of a three-match series takes place at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
