Steve Smith and David Warner set for return to Australian club cricket

Australia Test leadership duo Steve Smith and David Warner are set to return to play for their respective clubs, as they continue to serve one-year bans from international cricket.

Smith is set to be back in action in first-grade cricket for Sutherland, while Warner will do the same for his club Randwick-Petersham.

With the Premier Cricket season due to start on 22 September, a match-up that would pit Smith against Warner is in the calendar for 5 November when Sydney-based clubs Sutherland and Randwick-Petersham square off.

The pair were treated as pariahs for their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal that marred Australia’s tour of South Africa earlier this year.

Cricket Australia acted on the one-match ban dealt out by the ICC by banning Smith and Warner for 12 months, while batsman Cameron Bancroft was given nine months.

After seeing their IPL contracts terminated, Smith and Warner has followed parallel paths by playing in the Global T20 Canada league and are both now on duty in the Caribbean Premier League.

Bancroft had his move to Somerset terminated for his role in using sandpaper to doctor the condition of the ball during the third Test in Cape Town but was in action back in Australia last month, playing in the Darwin’s Strike League.
