Sad loss: John Williams didn’t recover from a blow

THIS week, news broke on the club-cricket circuit that an umpire had tragically died after an incident during a Pembrokeshire Division Two match between Pembroke and Narbeth. John Williams, aged 80, was hit on the head a month ago and sadly never recovered. It brought home to me the risk that we umpires face.
Technology in recent years has made the bats far better. Cricketers are hitting the ball farther and harder than they have in previous years, putting umpires in more danger.
