FURTHER to David Rimmer’s letter from last week (Overseas stars or county pride?), my concern would be that while the real stars from abroad do enrich our game – and have done for decades – the flood of journeyman imports currently on view constitutes a logjam when it comes local talent getting its chance.
By my reckoning, 12 out of 22 players in the Somerset v Glamorgan One-Day Cup tie were either from South Africa and Australia or Kolpak signings – or both.
In Glamorgan’s case, in particular, isn’t this short term approach a really damaging one?
