Problems associated with travelling from South Africa means van Zyl will remain in Cape Town.
But he will return to Hove for 2021.
While van Zyl, Sussex’s leading run scorer in the County Championship last season, will be missing, his fellow South African, David Wiese hopes to be available for the Vitality Blast.
