List of Purple Cap holders in the History of IPL
The purple cap is usually given to the bowler with the most wickets every year. The first purple cap holder was given to Sohail Tanvir, a Pakistan pacer, in the India Premier League 2008 first season. He had taken 22 wickets with an incredible 6/14 innings. From there on, there have been several purple cap holders. Below is the list:
Sohail Tanvir, a Pakistan cricketer, 2008 played for Rajasthan Royals. During the season, he played extraordinarily, ensuring that the Royals won the trophy in that first season.
Tanvir was responsible for running through Chennai batters, thus ensuring the Royal was a finalist in that edition. Furthermore, he scored 6/14 innings, which is one of the best records in the IPL history.
In the inaugural edition, Tanvir took 22 wickets at an economy rate of 6.46 and a strike rate of 12.09. His performance ensures that he is among the top 5 bowlers in ipl to win a purple cap.
In 2009, RP Singh played for the Deccan Chargers. During that year, he took 23 wickets in 16 matches, thus was awarded the purple cap. Furthermore, he participated in leading Deccan Chargers against Royal Challengers Bangalore during the finals.
Pragyan Ojha played for the Deccan Chargers in 2010. He is labeled as ipl top 5 bowler due to his unique talents. During that year, he had taken 21 wickets in 16 matches. Furthermore, he bowled at an average of 16.8 and 7.29 economic rates.

In 2012, Morkel played for the Delhi Daredevils. His performance ensured a score of 4/20 in a match against Kings XIPunjab. He also had a strike rate of 15.12 and an economy of 7.9. Furthermore, Morkel was the third purple cap winner whose team did not win the title in that season.
In 2013, Dwayne Bravo played for Chennai Super Kings. In that season, Bravo became the first bowler in the history of IPL to take 30 wickets in only one season.
He picked the 30 wickets at an economy of 7.95 and a strike rate of 11.71. The 2013 edition also ensured that it was the first season where the orange cap (given to Michael Hussey) and the purple cap holders were from one team.
But despite his outstanding figures of 4/42, CSK did not win the title as Mumbai Indians took over the win from them.
In 2014, Sharma played for Chennai Super Kings. He picked 23 wickets at an economy of 8.39 and a strike rate of 14.04.
Sharma was awarded the purple cap despite his excellent performance, but his team did not win the second qualifier against King XI Punjab.
Bravo is the first player in the history of IPL to be awarded the purple cap twice. In the eighth edition of the game, he picked 26 wickets that saw Mumbai Indians equaled CSK and KKR’s record of two titles each.
With an economy of 8.14 and a strike rate of 12.07, Bravo’s outstanding performance ensured he was awarded the purple cap, but his team did not win the title.
