Time was when all the best batters were small. Don Bradman, Brian Lara, Sunil Gavaskar, Ricky Ponting, Sachin Tendulkar, Allan Border, all were short in stature but long in run-scoring ability.
Then taller men, six foot plus, began to invade the best-of lists: Kevin Pietersen, Jacques Kallis, Sir Alastair Cook and now Joe Root.
Don't be fooled
At 5ft 6in Ben Duckett is in the small camp. In a game where beastly fast bowlers are often over a foot taller than him, it often looks like Gulliver versus a Lilliputian when Duckett is involved, but don’t be fooled.
