THEREwas speculation following Angelo Mathews’ resignation as Sri Lanka captain that Sri Lanka Cricket officials were at their panic stations with no contingencies in place for a replacement.
Their surprisingly quick instalment of Dinesh Chandimal as Test captain may have papered over the cracks but they are toying with a fault line by planting their best batsman as captain. Unlike England, Sri Lanka aren’t in a position to take a punt on their best batsman as a natural successor; they need Chandimal free to bring runs consistently.
