Mark Butcher: Surrey’s unrivalled depth makes them strong favourites for the County Championship

We’ve seen a lot of runs scored in pre-season warm-ups, and I expect that trend to continue in the early weeks of the County Championship.
People might imagine that starting the season in the first week of April would mean the ball zipping around and the bowlers having great fun, but that’s very seldom the case.
We’ve had a couple of dry weeks and dry, cold conditions generally mean batters can fill their boots. The ball doesn’t really swing because it’s too chilly and the pitches are typically slow and low. For batters, this is the time to cash in.
