The Sussex rebuild continues apace under head coach Paul Farbrace and – after a stellar year in which they reached Finals Day and topped Division Two – the challenge for the Sharks is to swim with the big fish of the Championship’s elite.
Brought to Hove a year ago after 15 summers at Middlesex, John Simpson was an inspired choice as four-day skipper, leading the way with 1,197 runs, the highest season’s tally of his career.
His average of 75 was none too shabby either. He also marshalled his bowlers superbly.
