Somerset have appointed last season’s captain Chris Rogers to their backroom coaching staff, subject to a four-month visa application being granted.

The 39-year-old will combine his role of batting coach with mentoring duties, as Matt Maynard’s squad look to better 2016’s 2nd-placed finish in the County Championship.

“Chris made a massive impact both on and off the field last year,” director of cricket Maynard explained.

“He was a huge part of what we achieved in the summer and was by far the outstanding candidate for the position.  It goes without saying that we are delighted he will be working with us again in 2017.

“He knows exactly what we expect from our players and is familiar with the culture that we have created within the dressing room.  He will join us on March 1st and will be with us until June 30th and in that time he’ll act as our batting coach.  In addition to that he’ll also work with the whole squad in a mentoring capacity.  The young players will learn a tremendous amount from him,” Maynard asserted.

Since losing out to his former county Middlesex by four points in last season’s Division One title chase and retiring from playing in September, Rogers has expanded into the media by working as a TV pundit and co-presenter during Australia’s recent series against South Africa.
