England captain Joe Root addresses Kohli’s send-off

Joe Root has responded to questions over how he perceived Virat Kohli’s send-off to him during the first Test against India.

The England captain‘s mic-drop moment in the ODI series came back to haunt him, as he once against failed to convert a fifty to a ton when Kohli ran him out for 80.

The India skipper celebrated his fine bit of fielding by sending Root back to the pavilion with a blown kiss and then mimicking his mic-drop.

Asked about Kohli’s actions, Root said: “I actually didn’t see it in the middle but I obviously saw it last night.

“I think it adds to the spectacle of Test cricket, gives the game a bit of humour.

“It makes it a very interesting series, that’s for sure. Let’s see how things pan out over the course of the Test series.”

Despite an ill-judged call to a single into two run, Root had cause for celebration at Edgbaston when he became the 15th batsmen to pass 6,000 Test runs for England.

Though the loss of his wicket proved the key to unlocking England who collapsed from 216-3 to 224-6 when the wickets of Bairstow and Buttler fell in quick succession to swing the game in India’s favour.

Root’s fifty was his 40th in Tests, but frustrations over his inability to convert for a 14th century are beginning to simmer.
