Hashim Amla resigns as South Africa Test captain

Hashim Amla has resigned as captain of South Africa’s Test team with immediate effect.

The batsman hit a superb 201 in the drawn second Test against England but confirmed his resignation, saying he needs to work on his batting without burden of captaincy.

Amla said: “I started thinking about this two weeks ago, not over the last couple of days. It just so happened I got 200 runs, but it has been coming. The temptation was there to see the series through, but if you feel someone else can do a better job, add more value then get them in.

“This decision is not an easy one but I believe I can be of greater value to the Proteas as a fully focused batsman and senior player.

“In life, if you’re going to do something you should enjoy it. I’ve enjoyed being captain, and I thought I could add value.

“I have chatted to some of the guys in the team so I don’t think it will come as a surprise. AB is very able and a brilliant captain.”

AB de Villiers will captain South Africa for the final two Tests of the series.

England captain Alastair Cook said: “It’s a bit of a shock.”
