Suspended Australia captain Steve Smith has a new club

Steve Smith will leave the Global T20 League in Canada following its conclusion and head to the Caribbean after signing for the Barbados Tridents.

The move continues Smith’s exile from Australian cricket as part of the 12-month ban handed to him by Cricket Australia for his part in the ball-tampering scandal which hit the Cape Town Test earlier this year.

Smith becomes the best possible replacement for the Tridents after Shakib Al-Hasan was made unavailable for selection for the Caribbean Premier League T20.

A relieved Barbados coach, Robin Singh said: “It is a huge blow to lose Shakib for the tournament but in Steve Smith we have a truly world-class replacement who can help to bring power to our batting line-up.

“As a man who has played cricket at the highest level all over the world we are very confident that Smith will be a big success with the Tridents.”

Smith played six matches for Toronto Nationals in the Global Canada T20 league in July, scoring 167 runs at 33.40 and a strike rate of 119.28.

Like Smith, banned Australia vice-captain David Warner will also follow playing in Canada by moving to the Caribbean.

Warner was already signed up to feature for the St Lucia Stars, with the first match of the tournament due to be played on August 8.
